With only six episodes running at 25 minutes each, Michaela Coel’s Chewing Gum caught our attention, intrigued us, grossed us out, made us laugh and then was over just like that. We pretty much looked like this when the credits for episode six started rolling:
It didn’t take much time for us to get through Season 1 after it premiered on Netflix at the end of October. Soon after, we were telling all of our girlfriends about it before sinking into sadness with a side of anticipation, thirsty for more. Season 2 premiered on the series’ actual home, which is Britain’s E4, in January with no news of when it would actually hit Netflix. But the good news is that we, those of us outside of the U.K. that is, finally have a premiere date.

The show’s official Twitter page shared that the Netflix release date is April 4. That’s actually a pretty quick turnaround compared to Season 1. The series originally premiered in October 2015, so it wasn’t picked up and shared with an international audience until more than a year later. As pointed out by Shadow and Act, the quick premiere this time around likely has a lot to do with the fact that series has been received quite warmly outside of the U.K., especially with women here in the United States. This has happened despite the show having a habit of making people uncomfortable — in a funny way. Coel told The Guardian in January that that’s what she wants.
“I enjoy making people uncomfortable,” she said. “For me, I don’t want to write a show that doesn’t make people uncomfortable. I don’t think I know how to write a show that doesn’t make people uncomfortable.”
