You’re never too old to learn, right? Well, 79-year-old Lucy Capers can attest to the aforementioned, as she recently earned her bachelors degree from Maryland University College.
Becoming the second person in her family to graduate from college, the great-grandmother who is an Alabama native got married at 18, raised three children, and quickly found herself taking a job with the Department of Defense. As a result, pursuing her education wasn’t a major concern for her at the time with an entire family to care for.
However, after retiring in 2002, Capers decided to enroll in Prince George Community College, where she received two associates degrees.
“Education is the key,” Capers told WJLA-TV. “Just having that knowledge is everything.”
But she didn’t stop at those accolades. Capers enrolled in an online program at Maryland University College, taking one class per term for the past decade.
Last Sunday (May 13), Capers graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Studies. She says she hopes to inspire her grandchildren and many others.
“This will be even more amazing to them, they will say, ‘If grandma can do it, we can do it,’” she said.
